Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

Recent research into tinnitus has resulted in new approaches to tinnitus therapy, and Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) is one of them. In a nut shell, this involves retraining the brain to disregard tinnitus. The sufferer will learn to deal with the tinnitus sound on both a conscience and subconscious level.
The treatment is carried out over an extended period of time and the results to date are very promising, with TRT helping a large number of sufferers.

The First Stage is for the professional to gather extensive patient information which will include tinnitus history, hearing, vertigo, lifestyle, diet, employment and any psychological problems currently being experienced.

The Second Stage is for you to have an extensive hearing test. This will allow the professional to “tailor” the treatment specifically to your needs.

The Third Stage is to introduce white noise generators that will provide a noise level just below that of the tinnitus sound. This is a different approach where previously white noise generators were used to mask the tinnitus sound. The aim is the complete habituation of the noise. When this is achieved the tinnitus sound will no longer be a problem for you.

Tinnitus Retraining TherapyThe Fourth Stage is to carry out the psychological treatment.  The aim here is to have the brain over time trained to ignore the tinnitus noise completely. During this stage you will be introduced to other treatment options that will assist in speeding up the outcome of the tinnitus retraining therapy. This will include stress management, relaxation techniques, handling insomnia, life style and diet changes, alternate treatments including vitamin supplements and physical exercise.

Tinnitus retraining therapy is considered successful when you are no longer continually aware of your tinnitus sound.
